OGOH-OGOH

Ogoh-ogoh are elaborate monsters made of bamboo that symbolize evil spirits in Balinese culture. Evil that is to be banned from the island through celebrations prior to Nyepi - the Balinese New Year. It's a special way to welcome New Year's - with a complete silence, no use of energy or any means of transportation - no plane lands on the Island of God's on that day. People are to stay in their homes, contemplate and let the nature recover itself from human activities. But before it all starts anew, the demons have to be banished with a Ogoh-Ogoh ceremony accompanied by loud music and light burning torches.
